Geometry of Switzerland

An explanation attempt

À l’occasion d’une exposition solo à la galerie lausannoise La Placette en août 2013, l’Atelier Valenthier proposait cette sculpture sur le thème de la fête nationale suisse et de son geste fondateur. Il s’est inspiré du plus ancien texte constitutionnel suisse : le Pacte fédéral d’août 1291, par lequel les communautés des vallées d’Uri, de Schwyz et de Nidwald, situées au cœur de la Suisse, se sont juré un soutien mutuel. L’objet reproduit ainsi la forme du pays par un système de 26 planches, entrecroisées sur le modèle des trois mains prêtant serment, et fixées entre elles par 26 bouchons, en référence aux 26 cantons qui constituent aujourd’hui le pays. La structure évoque la précision qui fait la réputation suisse mais interroge également le rôle du pays, son ouverture tout comme sa fermeture. « Zoll » signifie d’ailleurs « frontière » en allemand. La sculpture a été offerte par le Département des Finances et des Affaires extérieures du canton de Vaud à Pascal Broulis. On the occasion of a solo exhibition at the Lausanne gallery La Placette in August 2013, Atelier Valenthier presented this sculpture on the theme of the Swiss national holiday and its founding gesture. He was inspired by the oldest Swiss constitutional text: the Federal Pact of August 1291, by which the communities of the valleys of Uri, Schwyz and Nidwalden, located in the heart of Switzerland, swore mutual support. The object thus reproduces the shape of the country by a system of 26 boards, intersecting on the model of the three hands taking an oath, and fixed together by 26 plugs, in reference to the 26 cantons which today constitute the country. The structure evokes the precision that makes the Swiss reputation but also questions the role of the country, its openness as well as its closure. « Zoll » means « border » in German. The sculpture was offered by the Department of Finance and External Affairs of the canton of Vaud to Pascal Broulis. Special thanks to Studio Adrien Rovero and NOR Architectes for their help.
