Repairing the heart of your sweetheart

Ce classeur est une commande du service de cardiologie pédiatrique du Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois (CHUV). Apprendre que son enfant souffre d’une anomalie du cœur est un bouleversement pour les parents, qui se retrouvent forcément avec de nombreuses questions quant à son avenir. S’il ne remplace pas une discussion avec un.e spécialiste, ce dossier permet néanmoins de se familiariser avec l’anatomie et le fonctionnement du cœur ainsi que sa prise en charge habituelle et donne des clés pour accompagner l’enfant bien au-delà de son opération. Il décrit plus de 20 cardiopathies différentes avec les étapes de leur résolution chirurgicale. Le choix du boulier labyrinthe à perles en bois, objet fétiche des salles d’attentes médicales, n’est pas anodin. Par sa forme, son fonctionnement et sa symbolique, il a servi à illustrer la complexité du réseau sanguin et la précision de l’intervention chirurgicale cardiaque tout en offrant des perspectives à l’enfant en stimulant son imaginaire.

This binder was commissioned by the paediatric cardiology department of the University Hospital of Vaud (CHUV). Learning that one’s child suffers from a heart anomaly is a shock for parents, who are inevitably left with many questions about the child’s future. Although it does not replace a discussion with a specialist, this dossier nevertheless allows parents to familiarise themselves with the anatomy and functioning of the heart as well as its usual management, and gives keys to accompany the child well beyond the operation. It describes more than 20 different heart diseases with the stages of their surgical resolution. The choice of the wooden bead labyrinth, a favourite object in medical waiting rooms, is not insignificant. Through its shape, function and symbolism, it served to illustrate the complexity of the blood network and the precision of cardiac surgery, while at the same time offering perspectives to the child by stimulating his imagination.
