Kinky christmas tree

À l’occasion d’une exposition personnelle dans la galerie lausannoise La Placette en décembre 2015, l’Atelier Valenthier avait créé cette sculpture de circonstance, à l’approche de Noël. Mettant en scène un sapin encore emballé dans son filet, qui faisait mine d’attendre son « acquéreur » depuis sa vitrine, il invitait à réfléchir sur l’aspect commercial de cette fête et sur ses dérives, en usant d’un parallèle avec le trafic humain et les quartiers de certaines grandes villes. Retournée de façon à ressembler à un talon aiguille, la traditionnelle pointe habillait l’arbre et lui donnait un aspect humain. Pour poursuivre la métaphore filée, une lumière crue à l’entrée et des graphiques épinglés aux murs achevaient de recréer une ambiance de lupanar.

On the occasion of a solo exhibition in the Lausanne gallery La Placette in December 2015, Atelier Valenthier created this sculpture for the occasion of Christmas. It featured a Christmas tree still wrapped in its net, pretending to wait for its “buyer” from its window, and invited us to reflect on the commercial aspect of this holiday and its excesses, using a parallel with human trafficking and the neighbourhoods of certain large cities. Turned around to resemble a stiletto, the traditional spike dressed the tree and gave it a human aspect. To continue the metaphor, a harsh light at the entrance and graphics pinned to the walls completed the atmosphere of a brothel.
